Negative Population Growth and the Tanton Network’s Obsession with Population Control

0

Negative Population Growth, an anti-immigrant group financed by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) recently published its latest forum paper titled “Haiti’s Problems, and their Lessons” by Walter Youngquist. The two page paper essentially argues that the one of the root causes of Haiti’s problems is its population growth.

This is not the first attack on Haiti by the John Tanton Network since the horrific earthquake that ravaged the country earlier this year.

In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, FAIR called the Obama Administration’s plan to give Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals “reckless and overboard.” The John Tanton Network continued its lack of sympathy for the Haitian disaster when Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies stated in his blog on the National Review Online that “My guess is that Haiti’s so screwed up because it wasn’t colonized long enough.”

The attacks on Haiti, a country that is 95% black, by the John Tanton Network are not surprising considering its long history of ties to white nationalist leaders and organizations. What is also not surprising is the fact that Haiti has been criticized by the John Tanton Network for its population size. The Tanton Network is absolutely obsessed with population control, and more specifically who of that population has access and control over resources.

The Tanton Network boasts many groups whose sole purpose is to argue for population stabilization, including Negative Population Growth and America’s Leadership Team for Long Range Population-Immigration-Resource Planning.

Donald Mann, the head of Negative Population Growth once stated, “We should give incentives to low-income people who agree to sterilization.”

The Tanton Network collaborates with groups that also falsely blame immigrants for population growth and environmental problems. Groups like Californians for Population Stabilization and Alliance for a Sustainable USA, just to name a few.

The Tanton Network’s preoccupation with population control is quite frightening considering its disregard for human suffering and dignity. Walter Youngquist’s first sentence in the NPG forum paper is “Few people have as much sympathy as I do for the people of Haiti, especially for the children, for I saw their desperate plight years before the earthquake.”

But his “sympathy” is soon thrown aside as he launches into a tirade against Haiti’s high population.

Krikorian’s comment on Haiti is even worse, but this type of rhetoric has sadly become commonplace from the organizations and individuals who make up the John Tanton Network.

Controversial Anti-immigrant Group Attends Immigrant Rights March

0

Today in Washington D.C., Roy Beck, the executive director of the anti-immigrant organization NumbersUSA will be on the National Mall debating with immigration reform marchers who are flooding to the capital from all across the country.

NumbersUSA will be streaming the event live on its website as part of a four day anti-immigrant hate campaign which began on Friday. NumbersUSA’s campaign has so far failed to live up to its own high expectations with less than one percent of its alleged 900,000 members signing its most recent “anti-amnesty” petition, a key part of the four day campaign.

Throughout the campaign, NumbersUSA has updated its twitter page constantly. On many of the tweets there is the term “#AFIRE.” This term refers to Americans for Immigration Control and Enforcement, a “National DC based office in conjunction with Americans for Immigration Reform and Enforcement (AFIRE) made up of FAIR and Numbers USA.” According to this statement on the Utah chapter of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), we can see that NumbersUSA and FAIR are actively working together. This is just another example of two John Tanton Network groups teaming up to bash immigrants.

NumbersUSA’s finances and ties to white nationalists are very disturbing. Roy Beck, the group’s executive director spoke at a 1997 Council of Conservative Citizens conference, something that has haunted Beck ever since. Council of Conservative Citizens (CofCC) is a white supremacist hate group. Its conferences have hosted a who’s who of the white nationalist hierarchy over the years, including Jared Taylor, founder of American Renaissance.

Beck is paid a colossal amount of money each year by NumbersUSA to spew anti-immigrant rhetoric. Beck was compensated a whopping $274,500 in 2007 alone, Beck’s paycheck is more than five times the net income of an average American.

Beck has also begun to think about the future of NumbersUSA and who will replace him at the helm when he finally retires. One of Beck’s right hand men at NumbersUSA is Chad MacDonald, the Director of Social Media Marketing for NumbersUSA. Chad recently spoke with Roy Beck and Tom Tancredo at the National Tea Party Convention, telling the crowd that each tea party group should have an “immigration expert.”

MacDonald has been busy in recent weeks in preparing for the four day anti-immigrant campaign. He has appeared in many videos, on both NumbersUSA’s website and YouTube page, discussing the immigration reform march and NumbersUSA’s anti-immigrant response to it. MacDonald is a much younger and more likable alternative to Beck, making him an ideal candidate to be the new face of NumbersUSA.

NumbersUSA’s Three Branches of Financial Shadiness

0

money_treeNumbersUSA, the grassroots mobilizing arm of the John Tanton Network, has had a long history of lies and deceit. Executive director Roy Beck has long denied his connections to white nationalists. Beck spoke at the 1997 Council of Conservative Citizens National Conference, a fact he denied on numerous occasions until recently. At a recent event in Glenarden, Maryland, Beck told the crowd that he hadn’t been invited back since, in reference to the 1997 Conference.

NumbersUSA’s financial information is as murky and misleading as its leader. The group itself is split into three arms: NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation, NumbersUSA Action, Inc., and Americans for Better Immigration. According to financial documents, all three share offices and personnel with one other. NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization which means its lobby for legislation powers are limited. NumbersUSA Action, Inc. and Americans for Better Immigration are 501(c)(4) organizations meaning they have unlimited lobbying ability.

First let’s compare the income of NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation and NumbersUSA Action, Inc. According to its 2008 financial documents, NumbersUSA Action, Inc. received over $1.5 million in direct public support, NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation received over 8 million.

According to Open Secrets, NumbersUSA.com spent a whopping $630,000 on lobbying in 2008. NumbersUSA.com is the website listed on both NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation and NumbersUSA Action, Inc.’s 2008 financial documents.

Recently, Roy Beck wrote to NumbersUSA supporters asking them to donate money to help them pay the $90,000 a month they spend on “faxing, internet activism and grassroots mobilization programs.” Beck went on to say that NumbersUSA “doesn’t get a penny from any foundation or the government.”

This is yet another example of Beck possibly stretching the truth. According to its 2008 financial documents, the Sarah Scaife Foundation paid NumbersUSA Research and Education $50,000, but because it shares office space, personnel and a website with NumbersUSA Action, Beck’s statements are suspicious.

According to the Colcom Foundation’s 2007 financial documents, they gave NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation over $2 million. According to its 2008 financial documents, the Weeden Foundation gave NumbersUSA $25,000.

Roy Beck and NumbersUSA have a history of distorting the facts. There is a clear lack of transparency in this organization.

Though NumbersUSA’s financial information is very murky, its connections to the John Tanton Network are as clear as day.

Peter Brimelow Starts New Anti-immigrant/White Nationalist Website

Peter Brimelow

On March 1, a new white nationalist online magazine, AlternativeRight.com was launched. Peter Brimelow announced the move at VDARE.com where he stated that “Alternative Right is currently a project of the VDARE Foundation and donations are tax-deductible.”

This marks an attempt to forge a new right-wing publication that is a direct challenge to the more intellectual magazines out there such as the anti-Semitic Occidental Dissent, white nationalist Chronicles, and The American Conservative, a magazine founded by white nationalists.

AlternativeRight.com’s ‘about us’ page states that it is “an online magazine of radical traditionalism.” The website features blogs, videos, radio interviews, the magazine itself, and even an online store. It is obvious that the website’s content is weightier and more academic than VDARE or Chronicles.

When you look at the list of senior editors, there are some very interesting names that stick out. Richard B. Spencer, the executive editor, has previously written for The American Conservative and The American Spectator, he recently left Takimag, a publication run by former Chronicles contributing editor Taki Theodoracopulos.

Peter Brimelow and Paul Gottfried, AlternativeRight.com’s senior contributing editors, have strong connections to white nationalist and anti-immigrant groups. Brimelow is the founder of VDARE the white nationalist website that is named for Virginia Dare, allegedly the first white child born in the United States. VDARE received funding in 2008 from John Tanton, the founder of the modern day anti-immigrant movement. Brimelow also writes for Marketwatch, a financial website where he recently collaborated with Edwin S. Rubenstein, a fellow VDARE contributor. Gottfried is a regular contributor to The Social Contract a quarterly journal published by John Tanton. He is also president of the H.L. Mencken Club and a regular speaker at American Renaissance conferences.

The contributing editors of AlternativeRight.com also have strong ties to white nationalist and anti-immigrant groups. Richard Hoste is an author for the white nationalist journal, The Occidental Quarterly. Srdja Trifkovic is a regular contributor and Center for International Affairs and foreign-affairs editor to the white nationalist publication Chronicles. Derek Turner is a contributor to The Social Contract and attended the 2006 American Renaissance Conference. Robert Weissberg is a contributing editor for Family Secure Matters and attended the 2000 American Renaissance Conference. Christian Kopff has written for both The Occidental Quarterly and The Social Contract. Thomas E. Woods Jr. is a contributing editor for The American Conservative.

Greg Johnson, over at the The Occidental Quarterly Online, praised Richard Spencer for launching the site and gives us some hints as to what to expect from the website in the future. He states,

“Hoste’s article “Why an Alternative Right is Necessary” indicates that acknowledgment of Human Biodiversity (biological race and sex differences) have an important and secure place at Alternative Right. Steve Sailer’s article on “The Dispossessed Elite” indicates that Alternative Right will broach the Jewish question (having resolved my questions, I prefer to call it the Jewish problem). These are important advances on Taki’s Magazine (which, by the way, I still read regularly and enjoy).

The presence of articles by Robert Weissberg and Paul Gottfried indicates that Alternative Right is not a clone of TOQ or The Occidental Observer. (Not that anybody expected that, although some might applaud it.) But that is fine with me. It is more important to have a forum where our ideas interface with the mainstream that to have another Occidental something-or-other.com.”

Richard Hoste’s article on AlternativeRight titled “Why an Alternative Right Is Necessary” gives an indication as to why Brimelow decided to create this new publication. In the article, Hoste bashes Dick Cheney, who won the “Conservative of the Year” award from Human Events in 2009. Hoste argues “My point here isn’t to argue that the former vice-president is wrong when he advocates torture of Al-Qaida leaders, though I believe he is. It’s to show how intellectually hollow the modern day conservative movement is.”

With the amount of editors that have strong connections to anti-immigrant groups, we are bound to see lots of anti-immigrant articles on this magazine. Hoste’s article also gives us an indication of that when he states “For example, low-IQ Mexican immigration is the greatest threat to America.” Hoste’s article also has some disgusting examples of white nationalism, for example when he states “And not only do whites have nothing to feel guilty about, they are the best thing to ever happen to blacks.”

After reading the new SPLC report which indicated that there are now nearly 1000 hate groups in the United States and that anti-immigrant groups have risen by almost 80% in the past year, it is not surprising that websites such as AlternativeRight.com are forming.

The John Tanton Network Brings Hate to African American Community in Maryland

0

Tonight in Glenarden, Maryland, a townhall meeting is taking place entitled, “Understanding the Impact of Illegal Immigration on the Citizens of Prince George’s County and the State of Maryland.” The event features three groups connected to the John Tanton Network: Help Save Maryland, a group that is listed as a state contact on FAIR’s website; NumbersUSA, a project of the John Tanton Network; and Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI), another project of the Tanton Network. The discussion’s moderator is Sandy Pruitt of People for Change. Leo Alexander, a candidate for mayor of Washington DC and Paulette Faulkner, a former State of Maryland employee are also speaking.

When I first read about this event the immediate question that came to mind was, ‘why is the John Tanton Network, a network of organizations with strong ties to white nationalists, coming into a town that is 95% black and holding a discussion on immigration?’

On the surface, it looks as if the John Tanton Network is reaching out to African Americans, but this is not the case. It is instead trying to divide the African American community over the issue of immigration. In recent months, the Tanton Network has used a populist method to attempt to divide religious leaders from constituents, and business and union leaders from workers over the issue of Immigration. For African Americans, this is a civil rights issue, not an immigration issue. The fact that the Tanton Network has the audacity to come into an African American community and attempt to divide it is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. The fact is the Tanton Network does not care about the African American community, they are merely using it for political gain.

This impudent attempt by the John Tanton Network to divide the African American community will not end after the discussion in Glenarden tonight. Roy Beck of NumbersUSA will go back to Virginia and Monique A. Miles of IRLI will return to Washington DC, but one group, Help Save Maryland will remain. This group has been extremely active over the past year and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. This group is a danger not only to the African American and immigrant communities, but to all residents of Maryland. Until Marylander’s take a strong stand against it, Help Save Maryland will continue to divide communities at the local level just as the national organizations of the John Tanton Network are attempting to divide both nationally and locally.

Republic Broadcasting Network: Safe Haven for Hate

0

When I came across Republic Broadcasting Network, billed as “The most provocative programming on the internet”, I immediately thought it was going to be another conservative talk network like Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity. But after digging deeper and finding the list of shows and hosts, I came to the conclusion that Republic Broadcasting Network was not just “provocative” but rather extreme.

The network features a whole slew of extreme right characters, not to mention its weekly ad in the anti-Semitic newspaper, American Free Press. Two current American Free Press employees, Michael Collins Piper and Mark Anderson have their own radio shows on Republic Broadcasting Network. Both men have strong connections to anti-Semites. Piper and Anderson both spoke at a recent 1st amendment conference that featured famous anti-Semites David Duke and Texe Marrs as keynote speakers. Anderson is also spearheading the anti immigrant segment of American Free Press. Its August 10, 2009 issue, Anderson reported from the border in south Texas, spending a day in the company of the South Texas Minutemen Project. Michael Collins Piper, like many of his American Free Press colleagues has a long history of anti-Semitism. One of his many racist books, “The New Jerusalem: Zionist Power in America,” was on sale at the now famous Holocaust Conference in Iran in 2006.

A few former hosts on the Republic Broadcasting Network are also noteworthy. The most famous of these is James Edwards. Edwards, tapped by many as a rising star in the white nationalist community, runs the radio show Political Cesspool which used to air on Republic Broadcasting Network. Besides running Political Cesspool, Edwards is also serves as a board member for the racist Council of Conservative Citizens and the American Third Position Party, which also boasts anti-Semite professor Kevin MacDonald as a director. Political Cesspool’s guest list is also full of hate. The list includes anti-Semites such as David Duke and Willis Carto, as well as Nick Griffin, the leader of the white-only UK political party, the British National Party. Edwards has also had many anti-immigrant guests on his show, such as Virginia Abernathy – a self-described white separatist who once shared the podium with Rick Oltman of the Federation for American Immigration Reform. Edwards also hosted two other guests with strong connections to FAIR, Jim Staudenraus, a former FAIR spokesman and Wayne Lutton, the editor of The Social Contract, a quarterly journal published by John Tanton’s financial umbrella, U.S. Inc. FAIR is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center

Another former host on Republic Broadcasting Network is William Gheen. Gheen is the founder of Americans for Legal Immigration (ALIPAC), an anti-immigrant group. He is described by Anti-Defamation League as an “anti immigrant leader” while the Southern Poverty Law Center call him a “nativist” and quotes Gheen in reference to the immigrant population: “Call me old fashioned, but people should be able to shop at Wal-Mart without worrying about catching [t]uberculosis.”

It is clear that Republic Broadcasting Network is extreme. Several of its past and present hosts are white nationalists, anti-Semites and anti-immigrant activists. It is comparable to David Duke Radio and Stormfront Radio as a venue for hate.

Stories from the Anti-Arpaio March

0

div xmlns:cc=http://creativecommons.org/ns# about=http://www.flickr.com/photos/americasvoice/4279365139/a rel=cc:attributionURL href=The day began early, at 7:30am when we packed into my rental car and ventured to Falcon Park in West Phoenix. We arrived a little after 8:00am, two hours before the festivities were due to begin. As 10:00am approached, more and more people started gathering in the park, bringing with them homemade signs or grabbing one of the thousands made by Puente Arizona, the group of dedicated people who made the march possible. The first 100 people who signed in received a t-shirt as well as a sign. The entertainment started just after 10:00am with music blasting out from the stage as well as a traditional tribal Mexican dance which lasted well over 30 minutes.

Many thousands of people were in the park now with people still streaming in. People dressed in Sheriff Joe effigies were popular amongst the marchers who stopped to take pictures with them. All of the march leaders took to the stage as well as Linda Ronstadt who urged everyone to remain peaceful as the march began. The traditional dancers, many of them barefoot led the way while Zach De La Rocha, leader singer of Rage Against the Machine, and others followed behind holding a large banner. I walked between the banner and the dancers, about 4 rows from the front of the march.

The organizers did a fantastic job along the 3 ½ mile walk towards the Sheriff’s Office/Jail and spirits were high with many chants of ’si se puede!’ Many onlookers bellowed encouragement to the marchers and some of them joined the march after some coaxing. Each time a new person joined from the sideline large cheers and applause followed. As we approached the jail however, the atmosphere changed. A sense of fear and anger took a hold of many of the marchers especially when they saw police officers standing with arms crossed on the grounds of the Sheriff’s office.

Some of the protesters broke the line to get closer to the officers and yelled things at them before moving on. As we approached the turn in the road, we saw dozens of police in full riot gear as well as mounted police. The mood shifted again as we turned the corner towards the stage at the end of the road, which signaled the end of the march and the beginning of more festivities. The music started playing and well over the estimated 7,000 people poured up to the stage. One small incident occurred towards the end of the long line of marchers when a few young anarchists decided to challenge the mounted police which resulted in pepper spray being recklessly discharged by the police who made some arrests. The incident did nothing to dampen the mood as some of the marchers sat and ate ice cream with their families while others flocked to the stage to sing and dance to the music. The march leaders then took to the stage along with Zach De La Rocha and activist icon Delores Huenta who all made compelling speeches to the crowd. De La Rocha fired everyone up with a hard-hitting speech accusing Janet Napolitano of allowing Sheriff Joe Arpaio to operate without fear of punishment. This declaration brought chants of ‘no more Joe.’

The march ended with a powerful display of unity as the remaining thousands of people joined hands in prayer. As I left the march, I knew that I had been a part of something extremely positive and groundbreaking. It was only when I returned to the Quaker house that I learned the two most compelling aspects of the march. The first, was that the police estimate of the number of marchers was more than double the optimistic estimate of 7,000 predicted by the march organizers. Somewhere in the region of 15,000 people took to the streets of Phoenix on Saturday.

The most inspiring story from the march was told to me by Peter, a resident of the Quaker house who told me about helping an older woman find a seat near the stage after the march. After he got her some water he began talking to her and asked her why she was here. She responded by telling him that she was 73 years old and that she had marched the full 3 ½ miles for her caretaker, an undocumented mother of three from Mexico. “I walked all this way for her” the old woman told Peter, “she like almost all of the undocumented people in this country are here to help their families and nothing else, something must be done to help her.”

March Today in Phoenix, Arizona

0

2010-01-14 16.14.29As you are reading this blog, close to 10,000 people are taking to the streets in Phoenix, Arizona in a show of solidarity against the oppressive authority of Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. Over the past two days in Phoenix I have had the chance to meet people from all walks of life who have descended upon Maricopa County – ground zero in the immigration battle. People here have been planning the march against Sheriff Joe since May of 2009.

There is a tremendous sense of fear, anticipation, and excitement in the air. The good folks at Puente, AZ who have organized the march remain incredibly calm as 10 am approaches, the time the march is due to start. I arrived Thursday at the Tonatierra a beautiful blue and orange building which serves as the home of Puente as well as a community center which caters to people from all parts of Mexico.

I arrived just in time to sit in on a sign-making class conducted by Hernesto, an artist from LA, and Orlando, a local Puente activist. Before I knew it, I was shedding my buttoned shirt and khaki pants for a white t-shirt and some shorts to help in the sign-making. The most eye-catching and powerful sign is the image of a monarch butterfly, a symbol that has a lot of significance to the immigrants and immigration activists here in Arizona. Each year, the monarch migrates from Canada south to Mexico and back again. The question often asked in this part of the country is ‘if it is natural for an animal such as a butterfly to migrate, then why should we as humans be restricted from migrating?’

The scene at Tonatierra is dominated by artists and activists. Before the community center existed, the neighborhood around it was completely run down and desolate but in recent years it has been converted into an activist/artist haven complete with an (almost) vegan coffee shop. I went to lunch nearby with one of the artists, Francisco, who told me his story of being arrested by Sheriff’s Joe’s cronies and being thrown into the tented village for the night. Not only did he have to wear the now infamous pink underwear, but he had the unfortunate luck to be stuck in the tents on the only night of the year that it snowed in Phoenix. He can look back at the situation now and laugh, but he said he will never forget the suffering he was caused at the hands of the Sheriff. I am staying at a Quaker house not too far from Tonatierra with three dedicated organizers, Jason, Tenacity, and Peter, who could not be more hospitable towards me. They told me the history of their battle against racism and bigotry in this county as well as what to expect at the big march tomorrow.

I have spent most of today (Friday) making phone calls to people all across Phoenix encouraging them to come to the march as well as helping to make more signs. Seeing men, women, and children of all backgrounds coming together to make signs was a very powerful thing that will stay with me for a long time. This evening we had a delicious dinner followed by prep for the march and a moving prayer from a Rabbi who came from LA and some locals with roots deep in the heartland of Mexico.

All the signs are the march will be peaceful everyone is not letting their guard down. Arpaio looks set to show his face tomorrow and when he does he will cast his gaze upon 10,000 people who have come from all parts of the country to take a stand against the hate and fear that he has brought to this county.

Keep checking Imagine2050 in the coming days for a full recap and video of this groundbreaking march against bigotry!

White Power Music Groups Lure High Schoolers

0

Last week, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) released a report highlighting the exploits of neo-Nazis who are attempting to lure high school and college students into the white power music scene. According to the ADL one such scheme involves a website offering free music downloads in an ad published in school newspapers. Before the ads were published the website had free downloads of independent artists, but after the ads ran in the school newspapers the website changed to a strictly white power music site.

ADL Director Abraham Foxman described the increase in deceptive tactics by white nationalists and neo -Nazis by stating, “While the hatemongers have used stealth tactics before, now they are taking it to the next level by attempting to trick unsuspecting students into logging on to sites that appear harmless, but in reality are promoting music with a white supremacist message,”

White power music is a very difficult problem to tackle in America, especially with the technology that white power groups and record labels use today. That being said, there are ways that people can fight back. One such way is by visiting Turn It Down. Turn It Down is the Center for New Community’s campaign to counter white power music. The website has information for parents, teachers, and youth about the dangers of white power music and how to identify it. The website has a free resource kit available for download and distribution. Turn It Down has also produced a map that offers readers a visual of just how broad the white power music presence is in America.

Record labels have also stepped up in the fight against white power music. One label, Insurgence Records, has teamed up with the Center for New Community to create Project Boneyard, a highly successful album designed to deter white power music. Recently, Project Boneyard released a second volume. Insurgence Records has the latest Project Boneyard album available on their site for only $3 and it is even cheaper if you buy in bulk. I recently got a copy of Volume II and it is a fantastic compilation.

The good news is white nationalists and neo-Nazis are being forced to step up their efforts to get their white power message to Americans. Campaigns like Turn It Down and Project Boneyard are having an impact, and hopefully fewer young Americans are being lured into hate groups.

Willis Carto Reaches Out to More Extreme Anti-Semites

0

Willis Carto is not your typical 83-year-old. Instead of spending his days basking in the Florida sun or playing cards, Willis is still very active in his life’s work. His activities revolve around anti-Semitism and racism. Carto runs the anti-Semitic publication, American Free Press. American Free Press evolved out of The Spotlight magazine which stopped printing in 2001 after Carto’s assets were severely diminished due to a lawsuit. This lawsuit may have crippled him and his network financially but it did not damper their spirit. Along with American Free Press, Carto publishes the historical revisionist publication, The Barnes Review which specializes in Holocaust denial.

In recent months Carto and his cronies have been very active. Not only have they courted anti-immigrant organizations such as Center for Immigration Studies, but they have also reached out to more extreme anti-Semites. One example of this is an article published in the September 21 & 28 edition of American Free Press written by B. Frederick White. The article, entitled “Protesters So No ‘Tolerance’ for Rights of White Activists”, promotes the National Socialist Movement, (NSM) a neo-Nazi organization. At the end of the article, an address and telephone number are provided for readers to get more information on the movement. The organizations website NSM88.org is also listed. The number 88 has a special meaning for neo-Nazis; each 8 represents the 8th letter in the alphabet which is ‘h’, thus 88 translates to ‘hh’ which is short for Heil Hitler.

Last month, Carto continued courting extreme anti-Semites when American Free Press sponsored a First Amendment Festival in Washington DC. Only AFP subscribers could attend the event and its two featured speakers, David Duke and Texe Marrs, have a history of extreme anti-Semitic views. Duke, a former Klan member and Louisiana state representative spoke first about Judaism. He lambasted Jews throughout his speech noting at one point that “the racial policies of Israel are more extreme than the policies of National Socialist Germany.” Texe Marrs, a radical anti-Semite living in Texas spoke after Duke. Marrs remarked that President Obama “will go down in history as the first Jewish president of America.” He also attacked televangelists like Pat Robertson for being funded by Jews.

As we can see, it is obvious that Carto is trying very hard to connect with extreme anti-Semites. But why? For me the obvious answer is that Carto, along with many others on the far-right are finally bringing their hatred and targeting of Jews (or Zionists as the far right likes to call them) into the open. It is clear that Carto is trying to align as many groups and individuals as possible in a united front against Jews. They want their followers to believe that Jews are to blame for problems like immigration, the economy and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This sort of twisted logic must be taken very seriously because it is a threat that can have major consequences. Willis Carto, David Duke and Texe Marrs are influential people who are seen as champions by many on the far-right. They are not champions, they are merely racists.
